My eyelids felt heavy, but they fluttered open on their own, anyway. Was I dead? Impossible. The pain pulsing through my head and body was too vividly real to be a nightmare. Fuzzy shapes clouded my vision and terrified me, moving slowly, and morphing in front of my face.

A muffled voice began to whisper softly beside my ear, but it didn’t sound threatening. My ears felt like they were waterlogged. My brain felt mushy.

I blinked harder this time, and when I opened my eyes on round two, a vibrant red color flashed in front of my vision, followed by creamy colored skin.

Piercing gray eyes stared sensually into my soul as if they wanted to yank me out of whatever hell trap I’d fallen into.

I tried to sit up, but the figure with a lulling female voice gently placed a palm to my chest and leaned me back down.

“Shh… don’t try to get up. Just rest.”

I tried to speak, but the sound came out as more of a croak than anything else.

“Shh…” the woman’s tranquilizing voice trailed off warmly, soothing me as I laid back down. My eyes closed again. I was breathing hard, probably harder than I should have been given the fact that all I was doing was laying down.

“Where…” I began.

“Are you?” the female voice answered my question for me with an amused tone.

Her voice drifted through my ears. I knew I’d heard it before, but I was having trouble placing it. It was melodious, sexy.

I opened my eyes again and saw that fiery redhead with the milky skin and the pale gray eyes staring at me with a mixture of confusion and concern.

I stared at her and blinked to make sure I was seeing things correctly. My memory suddenly ambushed me.

I had been down in the cargo room, trying to salvage scrap parts on The Dominance, a mothership belonging to Lord Draxis. His robots had seized my legs and one of his guards had barreled his fist directly into the side of my temple.

Now here I was, with a pulsing headache, and the hottest woman alive staring over me as if she was afraid that I might pass out again or something.

“Carla?” I croaked, and quickly cleared my throat.

I shook my head to try and get rid of the sensation of cobwebs I felt inside my brain.

“It’s me,” she whispered softly. “Just try to take it easy while you regain consciousness.”

Her eyes were warm. Her smile was inviting. I felt drunk. I wondered if she had given me something… or maybe I was just getting tipsy on her seductive stare.

“What are you doing here?” I asked. “I thought that Draxis’ guards got me, and I was as good as dead…”

Carla shook her head. Her lips curled into a mischevious smirk. Her eyes danced with excitement.

“Nope. The assholes sure did try, but they failed miserably.”

My head was spinning. “How is that even possible? Those robot arms were coiled around me like a snake. The guard knocked me out. He threw me a sucker punch that made me reel.
